This magnificent Victorian property in an historic part of Richmond was given a total retrofit. The property was stripped back to its bare bones and at one time it was possible to see down from the roof through four floors to the soil in the basement below. The brief – To design a practical, but aesthetically beautiful living space for a busy family with the requirement for simple contemporary furnishings and lots of bespoke storage.  The property required a total refresh and the functionality of the space was paramount.  The family travel frequently and play sport so the ability to create as much storage for sports equipment, and luggage was important to the effectiveness of the finished design.

The kitchen design was conceived to allow functionality and beautiful aesthetics, and carefully considered finishes including polished concrete, exposed brick and silver greyed oak were used to add a beautiful pallet of neutral colours and textures to the design.  Desk areas were designed for both children in order for them to be able to work near to the hub of the house.

The small dark warren of rooms on the ground floor was opened up, offering a large practical open space.  To multi function this room, (entertaining reception, family, home cinema, TV space, office and effective, easy to use storage), as well as include the required 4 seat sofa within a 3.6m square area, practical movement though and around the room, and inclusion of other items of furniture, required careful consideration.  We felt the design should reflect a strong visual lead in from the entrance which was created using a floor to ceiling etched, curved glass wall to follow the contour of the sofa.  The practical element of this was one of privacy at night as the sofa faced away from the glazed front door now in full view due to the removal of internal walls.  In order to retain an element of the original two room construction of the ground floor, although bespoke storage was specified for the whole side elevation of the house, differing finishes were used to offer a nod back to the original configuration of the two separate rooms.

The design of the ground floor evolved further by the creation of mirrored columns, a gold leaf wall slicing up though the stairwell to the first and floor beyond and a fixed glass wall area to offer light to the rear of the hall and stairwell to the basement as well as a visually interesting break in the back of the hall storage for anyone sitting in the office area.

Children’s rooms were carefully designed to include specific briefs of colour etc from the children.  Rugs were coloured especially using bespoke colours for each room design, and fabrics from Designers Guild were used for bespoke cushions and beds supplied by Ligne Roset Central London.  The Book Worm book shelves were from Viaduct.

The family travel and have a home in New York, so we found an old print of a Manhattan map for use in the basement WC.  We worked on the design of the garden with the client, and supplied cushions using external weather proof cushions made with fabric from Designers Guild.
